La promesse est une déclaration dans laquelle on s'engage à faire quelque chose ou à respecter une obligation. Elle est souvent associée à un moment précis, à une occasion ou à une personne en particulier. La promesse peut être formelle ou informelle, et elle peut être faite à soi-même ou à quelqu'un d'autre.
La promesse peut être exprimée comme un but à atteindre, un idéal à réaliser, et peut donc engendrer une attente, une espérance ou une aspiration chez celui ou celle qui la reçoit. Cette attente est source de motivation pour atteindre le but promis.
Quand la promesse est tenue, elle fait naitre un sentiment d'accomplissement, d'illumination ou de satisfaction chez celui ou celle qui l'a reçue. Elle s’affiche comme une récompense, une lumière qui éclaire la route vers l'avenir et donne du sens à l'existence.
